about

What happens when one of Ōtautahi’s most out of control personalities joins forces with Salad Boys guitarist Joe Sampson? A rather excellent, weird as fuuck outsider rock record.

Notorious front person Andrew ‘Ox’ O’Connell, aged four-dozen-and-one, is the kind of guy who was run out of Dunedin in his uni years for inciting some sort of riot. He is a man of many talents: a poet, a ‘leisure consultant’, a downhill mountain biking legend (described as ‘The Godfather of New Zealand Downhill’ in a recent Spoke Magazine), fashion entrepreneur, mushroom farmer, stand-up comic, economist and stone mason.

Everyone in the Christchurch music scene has a story about Ox. Here’s one: he once branded himself with the word ‘when!’ at the climax of a long night where all three of the bands he fronts played at darkroom (look it up on Youtube). Everybody in Christchurch has seen Ox’s other band The Palace of Wisdom five times more than their favourite band, whether they like it or not.

“But who cares?? Is the music any good?” Well, dear skeptic, you’re in for a treat. Ox has assembled nothing short of a supergroup, and this album will surprise many with how cohesive and genuinely excellent the songs are. High points include ‘New Brighton’s For Lovers’ (a romantic look at one of Christchurch’s most run-down, earthquake ravaged suburbs), ‘Look Smart, Talking About Art’ (a straight-up banger), and ‘Can You Pass Me a Krombacher, JS’ (a tribute to this album’s guitarist). The album also includes ‘Petty Hedonist’, a cut which was featured on Melted Ice Cream’s Sickest Smashes from Arson City (Legacy Edition),

Ox is joined on guitar in these recordings by Salad Boys/T54 mastermind Joe Sampson who recorded this album live in Ox’s living room in New Brighton on a Fostex Multitracker 280 cassette four-track in 2018. This album features longtime collaborator Chris Andrews on bass and former marching drummer Julia Van Beek.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to discover that New Brighton’s for lovers!
